The average couple engages in sex only 1.5 times a week

Many men have unrealistic expectations of their performance in bed, expecting to last 20 to 30 minutes during sex.

This was one finding by the Society for Men's Health, from a survey involving 490 Singaporeans of different ages and backgrounds held on Valentine's Day this year.

Of the 2063 men polled, 42.2 per cent felt that a man should last 20 to 30 minutes in bed.

Among both genders, 32.7 per cent felt that men should last between 10 and 15 minutes.

However, a 2012 study conducted across five coun- tries - the Netherlands, Spain, Britain, Turkey and the United States - showed that the average man can last only six minutes.

"Men are telling us they expect to be supermen in the bedroom," said urologist Peter Lim, who is president of the Society for Men's Health.

"This unrealistic perception of the time between penetration and ejaculation can lead to a range of performance anxieties."

Couples also have unrealistic views when it comes to the frequency of sex, with 44.9 per cent of respondents saying it should happen two to three times a week.

The 2012 study showed that the average couple engages in sex only 1.5 times a week.
